If you’ve been woodworking for any amount of time, chances are you know the overwhelming feeling of going to the hardware store to pick up some screws only to be confronted with 7,234+ options. Flathead screw? Phillips screw? 6, 8, 10? Fully threaded? Partially threaded? What difference does any of this make?
We’re glad you asked! Steve is here from Wood Working for Mere Mortals to give us the ins and outs of everything you’ve ever wanted to know about screws. There is a ton of great info in the video below, but if you want a quick and easy answer – Steve recommends multi-purpose screws with square or star drives.
For those of us who really want to know more of the specifics, Steve has all of the answers! Ok, maybe not all of the answers – like why on earth slotted screws are still readily available at hardware stores – but he does give us some great info!
Of course, screws aren’t the only way to attach and assemble projects. Steve uses wood glue for a lot of his projects. It’s a lot stronger, plus it doesn’t show at all, unlike nails or screws. The disadvantage is that you do have to wait longer for it to dry, and you can’t undo your project if you make a mistake.
Go ahead and see what other tips and tricks Steve has for us in the video below!
