How To Pick The Perfect Fruits: Expert Farmer Shares His Best Tips

What’s better on a warm summer day than a refreshing bowl of fruit? Watermelon, cantaloupe, and strawberries are go-to snacks in the summer, and it’s easy to see why! These fruits are juicy and delicious, and not overly sweet like other summer snacks. Did you know that there is an art to picking the right fruit? With these tips, you can be sure you’re getting exactly what you want.

This list compiles the best advice from farmers who really know what to look for when searching for the perfect fruit. We also have some tips on storing fruit too!

Picking The Perfect Watermelon

The first thing to know about picking the perfect watermelon is to look at the field spot – that is, the place where the watermelon was resting on the ground. While every watermelon will have a field spot, the best watermelons will have a creamy yellow or even an orange spot.

Have you ever noticed the webbing on watermelons? The webbing is caused by bees touching the flower, so the more webbing, the more bees were around the watermelon. The more webbing, the sweeter that fruit!

Watermelons also have genders! Look closely at the watermelons in the bin at the store. Male watermelons are taller and will be more juicy and watery. Female watermelons will be rounder and sweeter!

Does size matter? Yes, but not in the way you might think. A lot of people go for the biggest melon, but that would be a mistake! Instead, pick an average sized watermelon – don’t go too big or too small.

Check out the tail of the watermelon in question to determine its ripeness. If the tail is green, it means the melon was picked too soon. The perfect watermelons have a dried tail.
