Grandpa Buys A School Bus To Take His 10 Grandchildren To School

Doug Hayes is one busy grandfather! With ten grandchildren to spend time with, you would think that he would be hard-pressed to find a moment for each of them. This grandfather hails from Gladstone, Oregon and he is resourceful, to say the least. He’s come up with an awesome way to make sure that he spends as much time as possible with all ten of his grandchildren.

He bought his own school bus! Now he can take all of the children to school each day and nothing can stop him! The purchase was revealed to the grandchildren on December 20. Grandpa wanted them to enjoy an early Christmas surprise. The bus has since been dubbed the “Grandfather Express“. Amy is Doug’s wife and she took to Facebook to let the world know about his new bus.

So there we were, enjoying a nice dinner out to celebrate Doug's 59th birthday last June. Just for fun conversation I…

The couple was out to dinner to celebrate Doug’s 59th birthday when the bus was initially mentioned. Amy asked her husband if there was anything that he needed to check off his bucket list. After thinking about the question for a bit, he decided that he wanted a school bus. If you know anything about Doug, this is par for the course. All he does is think about ways that he can help others.

“If money were no object, I’d want a bus,” said Doug. It would allow him to spend more time with his grandchildren and they could all ride around together every day. Amy was touched by the request. This man did not ask for anything for himself. She was not shocked at all. This is just who Doug is as a person. The Grandfather Express is now in full effect and we could not be happier for this family.

They are sure to enjoy each other’s company. Once Amy posted a photo on Facebook of Grandpa’s first day as a bus driver, it went viral almost immediately. Five of the grandchildren currently attend Paideia Classical Christian School. The other grandchildren have not yet reached school age. The private school does not provide busing for their students, making Grandpa’s purchase even more special.

The children were “ecstatic” when they saw the bus, according to Amy. It is easy to see why. Who wouldn’t want to get picked up by Grandpa each morning? Here’s hoping that these children are able to enjoy the Grandfather Express for many, many years to come. This is the type of story that definitely needs to be shared far and wide!
