Now that the coronavirus pandemic is clearly not going away anytime soon, there are no shortage of industries that are being affected by what is taking place. For starters, the hospitality industry has taken a massive hit. Bars and restaurants around the country are being forced to close their doors. Local governments are doing everything in their power to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus.
While these decisions are understandable, they leave the hospitality industry in a difficult spot. There is no end to this crisis in sight at the moment. The workers at these restaurants have no idea where their next rent or mortgage payment is going to come from. What many people do not realize is that a prolonged closure will cause several of these restaurants to close permanently.
There is no guarantee that they are going to be able to withstand being closed for this long of a period. That’s why the chefs who are affected by these closings have taken to Change.org so that they can circulate a necessary petition. Government leaders are being called upon to offer all of the assistance that they can. Otherwise, the hospitality industry as we know it could be coming to an end.
The Save America’s Restaurants petition has already received over 130,000 signatures at the time of this article. Chefs and restaurant workers are not going to be able to survive without a group effort. As a collective, we need to come together and make sure that these workers are given all of the assistance that they need in a timely manner.
High profile industry professionals are doing their best to spread the word and provide their signatures. Government officials need to come up with a plan, pronto. Needs may vary based on location, but payroll tax can be waived anywhere. Emergency unemployment benefits can also be provided to workers in any location. There is no excuse for government officials not to step up to the plate and do what is right here.
Restaurants are one of the most crucial aspects of any local community. They provide residents with a place to spend time with one another and these locations also bring in all sorts of tourism dollars. Too many individuals are forced to live paycheck to paycheck, leaving precious little wiggle room when a major issue arises. The least that we can do is sign the petition and pass it along to our friends and loved ones!
