We love baking up yummy desserts, but we are always especially satisfied when we bake a sheet cake. Not only do you end up with a final product that tastes amazing, but you have a dessert that can feed a crowd; if you have friends over frequently, why bake a dessert that feeds four people when you could make one that feeds 14?! This spiced apple sheet cake is our most recent creation and we were absolutely thrilled with the results!
With brown sugar and vegetable oil to keep this cake moist and juicy, plenty of cinnamon for the perfect spiced flavor, and pops of fresh apple, this cake’s flavor is the stuff of dreams and we know we’ll be making it a part of our baking routine moving forward. Not only that, but there’s a caramel-esque frosting that definitely takes the cake (pun intended) and really kicks things up a notch! It’s easy to make and ties the whole thing together. This cake is not to be missed, so start dicing your apples and get baking!
Apple Sheet Cake
1 hour to prepare serves 12-16
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 cup vegetable oil
- 3 eggs
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 3 cups apples, peeled and diced
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup evaporated milk
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- Preheat oven to 350º F and lightly grease a 12x17-inch jelly roll pan with butter or non-spray.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, baking soda, baking powder and salt until combined.
- Beat in oil, then add eggs one by one and mix in vanilla extract.
- Once batter is fully incorporated and smooth, gently fold in diced apples.
- Pour batter onto greased baking sheet and place in oven. Bake for 15-17 minutes, or until toothpick inserted in center comes out mostly clean.
- Remove from oven and set aside.
- While cake bakes, combine butter and brown sugar in a medium saucepan over medium-heat heat, stirring until butter is melted and brown sugar has fully dissolved. Pour in evaporated milk, then bring mixture to a boil.
- Cook for 2 minutes, then stir in vanilla extract and salt. Remove from heat and use a hand mixer to beat until mixture has thickened into a spreadable frosting.
- Spread over cake, then let set at least 30 minutes before slicing and serving. Enjoy!
